Doug started square dancing in 1977 and round dancing
in 1978 in Yuma, AZ. Leslie started square dancing with a singles club, the
Denver Fiddlesteppers, in 1973 and took round dance classes the following
year. They met at the singles’ after-party at the 1981 National Square Dance Convention
in Seattle. After a long distance courtship, (Doug lived in Salt Lake City and Leslie lived in
Denver) they were married in 1982 and Leslie moved to Salt Lake City to be with Doug.
In 1981, Doug began cueing and teaching rounds for the
Single Swingers in Salt Lake City, UT. Leslie joined him after they got married.
While in Salt Lake from 1981-1989, they cued for the Single Swingers, the
Stepping Stones and the Pieces of Eight square dance clubs. They also ran their
own round dance club “Sidecar & Banjo” and taught Phases II-III. They increased their round dance knowledge by taking lessons from Steve & Judy Storm. They were instrumental in forming the Utah Round Dance Teachers Association and were its first presidents. In 1988 they conducted
a successful “cuer’s class”. They were also involved with
the local square/round dance council in Salt Lake City; and cued and taught
at several Utah State Square Dance conventions and local festivals.
They moved to Big Pine, CA in 1989 where they cued for
the local square dance club and ran their own round dance club. They also
taught and cued at California State Conventions and at several local conventions.
From 2003 – 2009, they lived in Harlowton, MT. They
taught classes through the local adulteducation program, and cued and taught
at local square dance clubs and at regional and National Conventions.
They currently reside in Santa Barbara, CA where they
continue to cue and teach. For their own pleasure, they regularly attend a
phase 5 round dance class.
Doug and Leslie have cued and taught at several USAWest
and National Square Dance Conventions. They have also been featured round
dance teachers at local, regional and state conventions, including the Colorado
and CA State Conventions, SquareRama in Ogden, and the 1986 Knothead Jamboree.
They are members of Roundalab and are BMI/ASCAP licensed.
They are also members of the Southern California Round Dance Teachers Association.
They recently received their “Maestro Plus” award from Roundalab
for teaching 30+ years.
Since 1987, they have choreographed more than 20 dances
which have been taught in various venues around the country. Several of their
dances have been adopted as Rounds of the Month/Quarter in different areas.
Some of their more popular choreography includes: Sarah’s Song –
Ph 2, waltz; A Song in the Night – Ph 2, 2-step; South of the Border – Ph 4, rumba;
Once Upon A December – Ph 4, waltz; Burgers & Fries – Ph 2, 2-step; All I Got – Ph 3, jive and foxtrot; Maria Rumba – Ph 3, rumba; Summer Wine – Ph 2, 2-step.
They have two grown daughters, Sarah & Gwen, who both love to square and round dance.
